Travel and Safety
Travel Preparations
Passport: you will need a passport that is valid for six months after you depart Ghana.

VISA: Ghana requires a VISA for citizens of most countries. GHEI will give you the necessary documentation to support your application.

Flight: you will book your flight to arrive on the day your session starts and depart on the last day of your session.

Evacuation insurance: GHEI requires all volunteers to have evacuation and travel insurance in case of emergency.

Vaccines and malaria prophylaxis: volunteers are required to take malaria prophylaxis (medication for prevention), and to visit a travel clinic to receive recommended vaccines. Yellow fever vaccine is required for entry into Ghana.

Safety
Ghana is widely considered one of the safest countries in Africa. GHEI has worked in Humjibre since 2001 with no incidents. Visit the US State Department for more information.

When you arrive in Ghana, you will be met by our staff and travel with them until you depart from Ghana on the last day.

You will always travel in groups with GHEI staff and follow common-sense safety protocols.

Airport Pick Up and Travel
For more than a decade, Happy, Mensah and our driver Peter have welcomed volunteers at the airport in Ghana, travelled with them to our headquarters, and led them on a sightseeing tour through some of the most important cultural tourist sites in the country.
Accra
You will fly into Accra's Kotoka airport on the day your session starts.
The next day, you'll visit some of Accra’s most iconic landmarks, including the Accra Lighthouse, Makola Market, and the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum.

Kumasi
After your project work, you will travel to Kumasi, Ghana's second largest city, and the cultural capital of the Ashanti people, one of the most influential ethnic groups in Ghana.
Here, you will visit Kejetia market, the largest market in West Africa.
You will also visit Kumasi's Cultural Centre and Prempeh II Jubilee Museum.
Cape Coast
After Kumasi, you'll head to Cape Coast to explore the Cape Coast Castle and Museum, followed by a walk through the treetops on the Kakum Canopy Walk.
