they are happy and there is an awful lot I learned from them. I came back a stronger advocate because I can now advocate on behalf of a community I have gotten to know well, rather merely statistics.
What would you say to someone considering volunteering with GHEI? GHEI is a great organization with which to volunteer. Unlike many international organizations, GHEI responds to the needs of Humjibre and surrounding community. This means that you may not know exactly what you are going to be working on before you get there, or your schedule might change over the course of your stay, but ultimately what you do will benefit the community. Being a volunteer requires flexibility, but not for lack of organization, simply because GHEI does not believe in planning interventions in the US and executing them in Humjibre; GHEI believes in planning interventions in Humjibre, with the community, and carrying them out with the community, and with constant evaluation. Living in Humjibre and working with GHEI has a different impact on everyone who stays, but regardless of your background, your motivation for coming or your project, you will come home thinking it was one of the best experiences you have had.
