“I am a Woman Phenomenally. Phenomenal Woman, that’s me.” – Maya Angelou
Girls’ Empowerment Camp is a part of GHEI’s Summer Serve and Learn Program. Every year, this is a great opportunity for girls, who just completed their Junior High School, to attend the camp which provides empowerment programs which significantly impact their future.
For example, at the Girls’ Empowerment Camp in 2017, 43 girls had an opportunity to attend workshops that enriched their practical life skills such as leadership and self-esteem skills, money management, family planning and sexual and reproductive health skills.
Focus of each workshop was to provide real data and deliver activities that are based on real life situations. For example, after our Family planning sessions lot of girls confessed that they never had an access to the information about family planning and how indeed costly it is for them to choose to finance a child’s education and health. They said that they have changed their opinion about family planning and that, when it comes to number of children and supporting their development, it is more about providing a quality life than quantity itself.
Furthermore, they had a great chance to be heard nationally by attending the Unik Radio, affiliate to Ghana broadcasting corporation. The radio program hosted 43 girls who have attended the Camp and girls have spoken about their life-changing experience during the camp and the importance of Girl’s education. Thanks to our Summer Serve and Learn Volunteers and GHEI’s local staff, this project has been successfully completed and all the girls have successfully entered their Senior High School in different parts of Ghana.
Here are few moments from the radio attendance:
