Application Timeline Applications for summer sessions will be reviewed on a rolling basis beginning on February 1, 2010. This means that GHEI’s leadership will review applications in the order they are received. Applicants are encouraged to apply early as spaces may fill quickly. After February 1, applications are reviewed within ten days of receipt and selected applicants are contacted for interviews. Offers are extended to successful applicants within one week of the interview and applicants are given one week to accept or decline GHEI’s offer. This is done to allow ample time for fundraising, travel reservations, and general preparations for the trip.
Fundraising Requirement Volunteers selected to be a part of the Serve and Learn team will be asked to fundraise a total of $1,500 in installments prior to their departure for Ghana. A third of the fundraising requirement, $500, is required at the time of acceptance as a non-refundable deposit to secure the position. The remaining funds are due May 15, 2010. All donations are tax-deductible and many past volunteers have hosted fundraising events, received grants or scholarships, or been sponsored by close friends and family to satisfy this requirement. GHEI staff and alumni are also available to assist you with fundraising ideas.
Expenses Volunteers are responsible for obtaining vaccinations, malaria prophylaxis, evacuation insurance, a visa and plane ticket. Our Volunteer Coordinator will provide guidance on pre-departure arrangements. Upon arrival in Accra, Ghana, you can expect to have minimal personal expenses. GHEI covers the cost of project-specific materials, lodging, major transportation, a handful of cultural experiences, as well as lunch and dinner daily.
