2008 Summer Serve and Learn Volunteer
What did you and your team do for your project in Humjibre? We created a new curriculum for Girls Empowerment Camp, based around arts and sciences. We tried to show the girls that learning was fun, unlike many of the experiences they had in their schools. In addition, we focused on the important role of education in helping them achieve their dreams. We felt a little conflicted about encouraging them to go on to Secondary School when we knew in the back of our heads many of them did not have the $800 to do so. Hence upon returning to the United States, we raised money for three scholarships, two of which were awarded to girls in our camp.
Current schooling/career: Junior at University of Southern California
Future career goals: Work in development, social entrepreneurship in Latin America

How has your work with GHEI influenced you? Through my work with GHEI, I have been both humbled and inspired. Most importantly, I have gained friendships. The people I came to know in Humjibre, Ghanaians and Americans alike, were some of the most genuine individuals I have ever known. Their hearts for their work and the people around them continue to encourage me to this day.
What is you most memorable moment in Humjibre? On career day of Girls Camp, Annette shared her aspirations to go to university to become a civil engineer and come back to Humjibre to help her community. Her intelligence, drive, and sincerity floored me. Without a doubt, I believe she will achieve her dream and inspire many other girls in her community along the way.
Okay I have one more moment. The kids that hung around on the porch outside the volunteer house brought me so much joy. Their laughs were signs of resilience amidst poverty and hardship. They continue to inspire me to go on towards a career in development, as they did not get to choose where they were born, but deserve an equal opportunity to live and learn like those of us in the States have.
