Agatha Nkrumah, Teacher, Anglican primary school in Humjibre, Ghana, Africa
Agatha Nkrumah Agatha is a teacher from the Anglican primary school in Humjibre. She has been a teacher for 22 years and has seen many changes since the time she started. Primary schooling is now free which means more people come but class sizes have consequently grown. However, she says, “GHEI has helped the teachers in their teaching; it has helped the students to learn how to write and has also given stationery and other resources to help the school. GHEI has come to help our children learn. The children’s attitudes have changed and now they work hard to join the GHEI group. This has helped the teachers to teach all the students.”
Nana Adjo Ampong II, Queen Mother of Humjibre, Ghana, Africa
Nana Adjoa Ampong II In the matrilineal Akan system, the Queen Mother has a crucial role to play in Ghanaian society. Nana Adjoa Ampong II is newly enstooled on the Humjibre stool and says she appreciates the work GHEI has done in the past five years. In particular, she thinks the health program “is working because it helps the women to protect themselves from HIV/AIDS. GHEI also helped me to avoid getting pregnant too early and has helped young girls to advance their education.”
Janet Appiah, Assembly Woman, Humjibre, Ghana, Africa
Janet Appiah GHEI is proud that the elected head of the Humjibre village assembly is a woman, suggesting that the advancement of gender equality is continuing apace in this part of West Africa. Janet has been involved with the GHEI youth, lecturing them as a role model, and oversees communal labor organised to build structures like the community library. She is proud that this happened, saying that now “when the children get out of school, they have a place to go and sit, instead of roaming about”. She was also involved in reproductive health meetings and thinks one of GHEI’s biggest achievements is to “demonstrate to all how to use the condom. No one can now say they do not know how to use it or where to buy it.”
Gyapong Okumawuo, Headmaster of the Humjibre Junior Secondary School, Humjibre, Ghana, Africa
Gyapong Okumawuo Head teacher of the Humjibre Junior Secondary School says that GHEI has had a “great impact” on his school. “We coordinate with them closely and they help all our final year students prepare for exams. Our results have improved and now the students have real ICT experience and have improved their English a lot. GHEI’s involvement has raised the community’s spirit and the moral of the children.” He also says that the rubbish bins they have provided helped encourage people to dispose of their refuse in a more hygienic way.
