GHEI’s education programs respond to the needs and desires of the local community. We run supplementary courses for bright young students and have constructed facilities that the whole community can access to improve their knowledge and skills.
Youth Education Program / GHEI provides small group supplementary evening classes with 32 of the most motivated and gifted students from the local junior high schools. Combining the talents of local and Western teachers, we have developed curricula to provide access for students to new ideas and to help them succeed in their formal educational career. Classes are conducted in English and focus on critical thinking skills, interactivity, group learning and expression. By focusing on these skills, we hope to thoroughly prepare students for high school and beyond. Classes are conducted in a customized classroom with a whiteboard and facilities that are conducive to group work. The classes are free, but the students are asked to conduct community service projects to develop their awareness of the environment and respect for their community.
Scholarship Program / Like students everywhere, the children of Humjibre are eager to learn. However, many families find it difficult to pay the fees for senior high school. In addition, as there are no senior high schools in Humjibre, students are required to find the funds for board and lodging. GHEI has supported 43 students to further their education by paying the majority of the costs for continuing their education. Our first three students completed high school with help from a GHEI scholarship in 2008.
Community Library / It is difficult to overstate the importance to study of a quiet, well-lit room. Most of the households in Humjibre are busy and vibrant places; for most children, the library provides the only place to read and learn effectively. At the last count, the recently opened library stocks over 4,000 titles, covering subjects such as Math, Science and Nature Studies, Ghanaian and African Studies, African Literature, Children’s Story and Picture Books, as well as a wide selection of textbooks for primary, middle and high school students. Adults in Humjibre particularly enjoy GHEI’s subscription to the Daily Graphic, one of Ghana’s most reputable newspapers.
The Library is currently open seven days a week and is available to all members of the community. All library operations are managed in a team effort by GHEI officers, the Humjibre Library Committee and Comfort, the Librarian. GHEI teachers and volunteers often make themselves available for questions at the library. However, one of the most pleasing aspects we have noted during the monitoring of the library has been the willingness of students to teach each other. We seek to encourage this by providing as many materials (blackboard, chalk, paper and pens) as our budget allows.
