LOCAL MANAGEMENT

Clement Donkor, Program Manager

clement2

Clement graduated from teacher's college in Ghana and taught for 15 years prior to working with GHEI full-time.  As Humjibre's Assemblyman, a voluntary elected government officer, he concentrated on improving life in Humjibre for eight years.  He also started and manages a Habitat for Humanity community, which has provided thirty families with safe housing.

Clement has been vital to GHEI's success since its founding in 2001.  He has been involved in every aspect of GHEI's work including needs assessment, project planning and project implementation.  Since July 2004, Clement has worked full-time as GHEI's Program Manager.

The Program Manager is responsible for overall operation and direction of GHEI in Humjibre. This includes running the community center, overseeing all health and education projects, and all financial and administrative duties.  Through his extensive service to the village, Clement has come to understand the needs and desires of the community.  He directs GHEI to most effectively reach the goals identified by the village.

Several interns and staff members work directly under Clement.

Clement is also responsible for building the capacity of Humjibre to continue the work of GHEI through local leaders.  Clement and GHEI's interns will work together to determine what competencies are necessary for local leaders to obtain, and develop a plan of training.

“Akwaaba!  I teach English as well as Mathematics at GHEI. I was born in a village called A.B.Bokazo in the Western part of Ghana. I started my education at Takoradi Agyiba Primary School near Anakye Estate (Takoradi), which is on the south coast of Ghana. After the six terms in the Primary, I entered into Saint Augustine Junior Secondary School on the same Estate. After the B.E.C.E examination, I qualified with an aggregate of 15 and entered into St. Mary’s Senior Secondary School at Apremdo near Takoradi where I also pursue General Arts. The General Arts contains Geography, History, Economics as its elective courses. I completed Senior Secondary School in the year 2001 where I got the same opportunity of aggregate 15 to enter into the tertiary at Takoradi Polytechnic in the year 2002 to read Higher National Diploma(HND) of Marketing. I registered as a national service volunteer when I completed my course in 2005. I started my service with GHEI on 26th February 2006. I have served with GHEI for almost a year and I have a lot of interest in the work that the organization does.  After I finish my National Service, I hope to continue my education at University.  Currently, I am very interested in International Relations as a potential course.  I really enjoy music and football.”

“I am the current scholarship scheme manager as well as computer instructor.  Kofi Asihene is my native name.  Kofi is a name given to those who are born on a Friday.  I was born in a village near Humjibre called Kojina.  I have great interest in GHEI because I can help the community of Humjibre, perhaps even my family members who are a part of the neighbouring community.  It is good for me to work for GHEI as when my family need my attention on any form of problem, I can help them.  Also, I like the way GHEI staff help each other.
I started my education at Humjibre Anglican Primary and then went to the Junior Secondary School at Baakokrom, only a 5 km journey from Humjibre.  After the BECE examinations, I went to Senior Secondary School at Asankrangwa Senior Secondary School (ASANCO), which is about 43km journey from Humjibre.  There I studied science and finally, I entered into the tertiary education sector at Takoradi Polytechnic to read Civil Engineering for the qualification of Higher National Diploma (HND).   Following this, I started volunteering my time at GHEI in October 2005.  When I started my term as a National Service Volunteer, I requested to work with GHEI as I could see the good work that the organization was doing and wanted to contribute.”

“I am from Accra where I completed my primary and J.S.S education. I moved to Cape Coast for my Senior Secondary School education at Mfantsipim School. At the University of Ghana I majored in Psychology. My thesis was on ‘community psychology and HIV/AIDS’ and I’m excited to apply my findings in practice. I would love to pursue a Masters degree in International Development abroad, either in the UK or in the USA. G.H.E.I has given me the opportunity to adopt a worm’s eye-view about the situation on the ground and to be able to make a difference in the lives of people. "

“I am the librarian for GHEI.  I joined on 15th May 2005.  I was born in a village called Assine in the west of Cote d‘Ivoire and I lived there till 10 years old.  So, as well as Sefwi (the local language), Twi and English I am also fluent in French and Eynie!  I am in form 3 at the local Anglican Junior Secondary School and have my BECE examinations in April.  I hope to study General Arts at Senior Secondary School because I am going to be a journalist in the future.  I like looking after the library because it helps me to learn.  I am currently reading the first Harry Potter book and am really enjoying the tales of Hogwarts school.  I am looking forward to moving into the new library when it is built"

“I act as the community hall overseer. This means I set the place up for community meetings, hire the hall out for use by groups to hold events and make sure the lights are out at the end of the night. I have 15 children and a 6 acre farm but I volunteer my time for GHEI because I think it is doing good work in the community.”
