PROGRAM COORDINATOR POSITIONS

Program Coordinators are given the large responsibility of helping to manage GHEI's programs with local managers and staff.   In addition, GHEI Program Coordinators supervise short-term volunteers with their projects (see Program Coordinator info for details).  Term length is usually thirteen months, which includes a one-month overlap period with the outgoing Program Coordinator to allow for training.

This position is subsidized by GHEI, which means that Program Coordinators are not required to fundraise.  They receive a stipend to subsidize expenses incurred while working with GHEI.  GHEI cannot pay for plane tickets or other travel costs.

Education Program Coordinator

The education programs are designed to foster improved academic performance and creative thinking for all children in the village.  This Coordinator works with the Ghanaian staff to manage the following programs:
  • Youth Education Program- The Program Coordinator works alongside one Ghanaian teacher and one Ghanaian volunteer to teach a supplemental education program for selected groups of Junior High School students. The lessons focus on the core exam subjects, with emphasis on discussion, participation and creative thinking.
  • Tutoring Center- The center is open from 7:30-9PM every weekday, and the Program Coordinator works with local Ghanaian teachers to ensure that lessons on core topics are taught to all children: Math, General Science, Social Science, English.
  • Computer Center- The computer center is currently open for 2 hours each weekday and for 4 hours on Saturdays and Sundays for general use and skills practice. Community member and students also have the opportunity to attend computer classes which last for 2 hours four times each week.  One Ghanaian staff member manages the computer center with the help of another part-time employee. 
  • Community Library- The library has more than 1,100 titles and is open for 3 hours each weekday and for five hours each weekend day. The Program Coordinator supervises the library and coordinates the program in tandem with a full time Librarian
  • Scholarship program- GHEI has awarded many scholarships to Youth Education Program participants and other deserving candidates so that they may study in Senior High School.  One of the Ghanaian staff members oversees the disbursement of funds for this program.

Health Program Coordinator

The health programs encompass all aspects of health in the village and operate holistically to improve the health of the population. The Program Coordinator helps to manage the following programs:

  • Youth Peer education program- work with 10 local teenagers, training them in various health topics and teaching them how to share their knowledge with their peers.  Peer educators attend weekly focus groups/meetings and conduct fortnightly outreach sessions.
  • Adult Peer Education Program - work with 6 adult peer educators.  Peer educators attend weekly training sessions/meetings and conduct twice monthly outreach sessions.  They are trained in various health topics, as well as health education techniques and the importance of improving the community's ability to fight ill-health.  The Adult Peer Educators receive a small stipend for their work with GHEI.
  • Yearly de-worming and hygiene campaigns- while hygiene and nutrition are emphasized throughout the year, all children in the village receive de-worming medication yearly and starting in 2007, many children will receive sandals to decrease the transmission of hookworm (spread in soil).
  • Malaria prevention program- village members are educated about the prevention and treatment of malaria.  Baseline research will be conducted in the summer of 2007 and winter 2008 as the first step toward creating an evidence based initiative tailored to this community to decrease malaria morbidity and mortality.
  • Health Promotion Festivals, for example World AIDS Day and Malaria Day festivals are held periodically during the year and typically include speakers, games, music and parades.
  • Condom Distribution Program- a Youth Peer Educator sells condoms in the community center at a greatly reduced rate
