History of the Ghana Health and Education Initiative

2001: The Birth of GHEI

October - GHEI is founded by medical, law and social work students at the University of Maryland

December - The village of Humjibre is selected as community base for GHEI's work.

2002-2003: Needs Assessment

June-September- Needs assessment, relationship building and project planning

March - GHEI becomes an International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA) Transnational Project

2003-2004:  First Project Year

August - beginning of project work and year-round internship program

September - Junior Secondary School English Class/Scholarship Program begins with sixteen students

December - First Annual World AIDS Day event in the village.

January - Adolescent Peer Education Program begins.

March - GHEI is recognized as Nongovernmental Organization by the Ghanaian government.

April - Medisend, a non-profit organization in the US, ships a 20 foot container of medical supplies and equipment to Bibiani Hospital in Bibiani District, where Humjibre is located.

May - Community Center Phase I completed.

2004-2005: Second Project Year      

June - Clement Donkor is hired as GHEI's Program Manager, first Ghanaian intern is hired.

July - Unite for Sight volunteers begin Phase I of their work in Humjibre.  Phase II is completed in November and December of 2004.  In total, fifty-six patients receive sight restoring cataract surgery and 1,000 sunglasses and reading glasses are distributed to the community.

September - Eight students added to GHEI's Junior Secondary School English Class/Scholarship Program, Vocational School opens with Batik-making class.

November - Women's Health Education Program begins; Safe Haven, a US non-profit organization visits to help with the second annual World AIDS Day.

February - Tutoring Center Opens, Condom Sale/Distribution begins, Adult Peer Education program begins with five women.

May - Community Library Opens, Computer Training Classes begin, nine new young peer educators are added to the Adolescent Peer Education program.

2005-2006: Third Project Year

June-August - Summer Serve and Learn Program- Twelve volunteers divided into three teams work on various health and education projects in Humjibre.
