“And because they [CHWs] are also in the community, it reinforces the net beneficiaries to always use the net because there is the fear that one day these people might pop in to see. So it is good that they are there.”
Humjibre Distribution / Following the success of the intervention in Sorano, GHEI worked with their team of 7 CHWs to implement the same bednet distribution intervention to all of Humjibre in two phases in 2009 and 2010. The team distributed over 2,000 bednets to cover every sleeping area in Humjibre. In the upcoming year, GHEI will work on continuing follow-up visits and conduct community-wide evaluations to determine bednet usage rates.
Upcoming Distributions / Working with community leaders and a team of newly recruited and trained CHWs from Kojina, GHEI will start bednet distribution and follow-up in Kojina early in 2011.
Malaria Film / In order to increase a greater understanding and awareness of malaria control, GHEI collaborated with playwright Laconia Koerner to write and direct an educational movie on malaria. With the CHWs acting in the language Twi, topics covered in the film include: what malaria is and how you get it, the symptoms of malaria, how to prevent malaria, and what you should do if you think you have malaria. The film debuted to an audience of 120 in May 2010, and was well received.
Millennium Villages Project / GHEI has been in contact with the United Nation's Millennium Villages Project (MVP) since 2007. After hearing about our approach to malaria prevention in 2009, MVP expressed interest in visiting Humjibre to learn more about our malaria prevention intervention. For 3 days in March 2010, 10 MVP staff visited Humjibre where they worked with the CHWs on distribution and with local staff to review design, monitoring and evaluation of GHEI's bednet intervention. Since their visit, MVP piloted the same intervention in 3 of the 30 villages they serve. With promising results so far, MVP plans to expand the intervention to all of the 30 villages in their catchment area.
How you can help / Preventing malaria in Humjibre and surrounding communities is an incredibly important but also a challenging goal for GHEI. If you are interested in helping, please consider donating to GHEI. A $100 donation can be used to buy 40 bednets, which would cover about 100 people, but a donation in any amount is welcome.
