GHEI provides treated bednets free of charge, usage rates increase.
Since 2006, GHEI has been providing treated bednets to the community free of charge. In 2007, GHEI implemented a Bednet Distribution Program in the neighboring community of Sorano. With the help of volunteer researchers, community leaders and a team of trained Community Health Workers, GHEI distributed bednets free of charge to every sleeping area in Sorano. As part of the distribution, the Community Health Workers helped hang the nets for the family, educated them on proper bednet usage and care using a culturally appropriate flipchart, and followed-up with each household to encourage usage and help with care. The program was incredibly successful. After one year, individual usage increased from 29% to 97%.
